Background
Hello, I am Eric J. Cowart MACC, LPC. I am a 2004 graduate from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary from which I obtained a Master of Arts Degree in Christian Counseling. These profiles and inventories are often utilized in the performance of my counseling services.
Over the past four years in counseling, I have been exposed to a variety of clients. I served as a Chaplin Intern at Carolina’s Medical Center where I worked with patients and families on the neurological unit, as well as, other patients and families throughout the hospital during my on-call rotations. This on-call setting allowed me to work with families in a variety of settings ICU settings such as pediatric, neonatal, surgical, medical, as well as the ER general hospital units.
I have further worked for four years with individuals that have experienced divorce by providing divorce care through my local church. This group works with individuals who are currently working through divorce, as well as, those that have been divorced for some time. We also minister to the children whose parents fit the above criteria. Through this group we work through issues of depression, anger, forgiveness, as well as, other related topics.
Thirdly, as an intern at Pathways in the youth department, I worked with a variety of youth with various conditions such as: ADHD, Oppositional Defiant, Conduct, and other disorders common to children. I also worked with a number of clients who had been physically and sexually abused. Further, I was exposed to Beacon Hall (school for children with mental disorders) and Warlick school (School for children with behavioral problems in public school). I also worked with a number of youth currently in the court system in the area of substance abuse. I was also exposed to more rare disorders such as paranoid schizophrenia. Lastly, I gained experience by working side-by-side with the staff psychiatrist and nurse practitioner in the area of medication management.
I was employed for almost two years, as well as served as an intern for almost one year at Family Service Incorporated, working with families, individuals, and couples in a variety of areas. Among those areas include: working with mood disorders, personality disorders, marital issues, substance abuse issues, anger management, and others. I served as facilitator two three groups at Family Service: Domestic Violence, Dissociative Identity Disorder, and a group with children who have been sexual abused. Family Service has provided me with an area of specialization with children and adults who have been sexual and physically abused.
Finally, we have operated At the Heart of the Matter Christian Counseling Ministry now for almost two years. Our goal here is to serve to local community by providing counseling services to individuals and families that come of need of our services no matter of ability to pay. We trust that God will meet our needs and minister to both our clients and us as we meet together. We don not believe in forcing scripture upon our clients, but rather try to provide the love that Christ portrayed to us when He died for us on the Cross. We utilized Biblical, as well as psychological principles and practices in our services. My further training as a profession consist of working on the weekend at Gaston Memorial Hospital in the Emergency Room completing psychological intakes to determine if patients meet the need for in-patient treatment.
